French judges grilled Christine Lagarde, head of the International Monetary Fund, on the 23 and 24 May 2013 over allegations that she acted illegally in approving a €400m pay-off for a businessman when she was finance minister in 2007 under former president Nicolas Sarkozy. The case was potentially embarrassing for both the IMF and for France, particularly if Ms Lagarde was placed under formal investigation after the hearing, a step that would not imply guilt but often preceded the laying of charges. However, the FT and other news sources reported on the 24 May 2013 that the French court eased the pressure on Mrs Lagarde and the IMF by stopping short of making her an official suspect. She would unlikely be brought to trial in the case, lifting a cloud that had gathered over her position as leader of the IMF. However, in August 2014 Christine Lagarde revealed that she was under formal investigation in France for 'negligence' over her role in the 2008 corruption case that involved a controversial state payout to French tycoon Bernard Tapie. |
