A French special court, the Judicial Court of the Republic, found International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde guilty on the 19 December 2016 of criminal 'negligence' for failing to protect the French state’s financial interests in a case she had to decide when she was finance minister in 2008 under the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy.

Later, Executive Board of the IMF reaffirmed 'its full confidence in the Managing Director’s ability to continue to effectively carry out her duties'.
