The coalition that had taken office in Rome in June 2018 did not begin well. But as Andrea Capussela wrote, among its proposals was a plan to strengthen the rule of law, which could improve Italy’s unfair and inefficient system. Its opponents lay not only among the country’s establishment, however: tension also existed within the coalition between the Five Star Movement and the League. These obstacles could only be overcome through an open political battle, which could lead the coalition to a more productive path. This article is based on the findings in the author's book The Political Economy of Italy's Decline (OUP, 2018) |
