ICJ set to rule on Kosovo independence / Kosovo declaration of independence ruled lawful

The International Court of Justice announced on the 22 July 2010 its long awaited ruling on the legality of Kosovo’s declaration of independence in February 2008.

The ICJ declared that Kosovo's independence was in line with international law. The ruling was a blow to Serbia but was welcomed by Germany and the US.

Serbia could continue to reject the division of its territory as illegal, with the court not ruling on the legality of secession as such.
