Iceland looked set to go ahead with a referendum on the 6 March 2010 on a deal to repay the United Kingdom and the Netherlands €3.9bn lost in the failed Icesave bank even as talks continued between the three countries in search of a compromise.

The collapse of the banking system and sharply declining standards of living have prompted many to turn their backs on Europe and seek economic salvation in traditional industries.
