Iceland's President Olafur Grimsson called a referendum in February 2011 on a revised plan to repay the UK and Netherlands the €4bn they lost when the Icesave bank collapsed in 2008.

London and The Hague have been battling since to recover the money from Reykjavik in the face of opposition from many Icelanders who object to paying for foreign deposits lost in a private bank.
