Iceland’s president scrambled on the 6 January 2010 to contain the fallout from his decision to block legislation to repay the United Kingdom and the Netherlands more than €3.8bn lost in the failed Icesave (Landsbanki) bank as the government proposed a date in February 2010 for a referendum on the controversial deal.

He told the BBC's Newsnight programme that Iceland will pay its debt to the British and Dutch governments.
