Article reported that Court proceedings started on the 5 September 2011 in the prosecution of Geir Haarde, a former Icelandic prime minister, over his handling of the country’s 2008 bank crash.

Mr Haarde is thought to be the first politician anywhere in the world to face criminal trial in connection with the global financial crisis.

At a hearing in Reykjavik on the 5 September 2011, defence lawyers demanded the dismissal of charges that he acted negligently in the run-up to the Icelandic bank meltdown.
