Date: 15/02/1996 European Parliament President Klaus Hänsch has been quick to respond to complaints from a Dutch Green MEP about the perk of tax-free petrol for senior Parliament officials. Entre Nous reported last week that Nel van Dijk was up in arms because of an allowance of up to 100 litres of tax-free petrol every month for A1, A2 and A3 grades. She wants it banned as an unnecessary luxury which only reinforces the 'fat cat' slurs on EU officials. After making inquiries, Hänsch replied that in 1994, 47 European Parliament officials were granted 50,640 litres of untaxed fuel at preferential rates, not to mention the VAT exemption on buying cars and the annual tax-free allowance on drink. Hänsch added that he thought it was now difficult to continue justifying such arrangements. |
