Book abstract: This book responds to the growing interest in human rights among students, lawyers, teachers, diplomats and other professional groups, as well as the general public as a whole. The collection brings together in one volume a selection of major international texts in the field of human rights. The first edition of this book was published in 1992 and the developments of human rights standards since this date, both at universal and regional levels, has led to this new edition to reflect these advances. The book is also published to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Council of Europe's European Convention on Human Rights. The book is split into two parts. Part A, Universal protection of human rights, gives texts prepared within the International Labour Organization, the United Nations and those prepared at the World Conference on Human Rights. These are in chronological order by organisation. In Part B, Regional protection of human rights, there are texts prepared within the Council of Europe, the Organization of African Unity, the Organization of American States and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) (formerly CSCE). The earliest text is the Forced Labour Convention, 1930 (No.29). The most recent texts are from 1999. The book does not include all international texts on the subject, however it aims to provide an introduction to the vast subject and a working tool for students, professionals and others working in the field of human rights. |
