Homophobia and genderphobia in the European Union

Abstract:

Sexual orientation and gender identity have been more and more identified as grounds of discrimination in European as well as in national legislation. Today, the situation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer persons in the EU is considered a human rights concern.

But what can the EU really do in order to counter homophobia and genderphobia?

In this report, Judit Takács examines several types of homophobia indicators and with the help of comparative quantitative data she also illustrates the markedly different levels of social acceptance of LGBTQ persons in Europe.
