It is remarkable how many important speeches Commissioners are required to make in member states around holiday time.

Last Thursday's (9 May) Schuman Day holiday was followed by a plethora of vital 'missions' on Friday - which just happened, by coincidence we assume, to take several Commissioners back to their home countries.

While Franz Fischler attended the Coceral conference in Vienna, Edith Cresson had a pressing engagement at an innovation congress in Paris, João de Deus Pinheiro visited the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities in Lisbon and Neil Kinnock was in Swansea for the Welsh Labour Party Conference.

If this goes on, they'll have to rewrite that old saying about home being where the heart is. It seems that home is, in fact, where the speech is.
