Date: 19/10/1995 This year's quadrilateral meeting of trade chiefs from the EU, US, Japan and Canada will be held in Yorkshire, Trade Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan's home county and his constituency when he was a UK Conservative Member of Parliament from 1974 to 1988. Brittan chose the venue doubtless to impress his visitors with the beauty of his native land rather than to boost his already high profile with his local political party. To be fair, Brittan is not the first to bring an international delegation onto home territory. A Canadian trade minister once invited the Quad to his home town of Sioux Ste Marie, in the middle of nowhere, for meetings and canoe trips. “It took three three days to get there, but everyone loved it,” said a Canadian official. It remains to be seen whether Yorkshire attracts such rave reviews. |
