The European Court of Human Rights ruled on 2 October 2001 that the UK government had violated the human rights of residents living near London's Heathrow airport by failing to strike a fair balance between the competing interests of the community - the economic benefits from night-time flights - and those of individuals. The level of noise allowed by British regulations at Heathrow unfairly breached residents' rights to respect for their private and family life and home. |
