On 12 September 2016, the European Parliament's Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) were held a hearing of European Commissioner-designate Sir Julian King. He had been nominated as a result of the resignation of Lord Hill following the outcome of the UK referendum on withdrawal from the Union in June 2016. Under the EU Treaties, a new Member of the Commission is appointed by the Council by common accord with the Commission President, after consulting Parliament. On the 2 August 2016, the President of the European Commission had announced his intention to allocate the Security Union portfolio to Sir Julian King. The European Parliament endorsed his candidature as Commissioner for the Security Union on 15 September 2016. |
