William Hague, the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary (Foreign Minister), said in a keynote speech on the 1 July 2010 that the UK government would seek to develop Britain's influence in the European Union by aiming to increase the number of 'bright British officials' entering EU institutions. Mr Hague also gave a fresh indication of the government's determination to avoid any tensions with the EU. He said that far from alienating itself from Europe, the government would seek to give 'due weight' to Britain's membership of the bloc and other multilateral institutions. The Minister delivered his second speech on the Coalition Government's vision for foreign policy in Tokyo, Japan, on 15 July and the third at Lincoln's Inn, London, on 15 September 2010. The fourth, and final, speech was delivered at Georgetown University, USA, on 17 November 2010. |
