Greece’s growing political and economic problems in 2015 have its small neighbour Macedonia sensing an opportunity to push hard for joining NATO, a move that has been stalled for years thanks to Athens’ opposition because of disputes over Macedonia’s name. Article reports that Macedonia has suggested that it would accept NATO membership under the hated FYROM acronym. NATO's formal position is that the country 'has to find a mutually acceptable solution with Greece to the issue over its name before it can be invited to join NATO'. The country actively supported the NATO-led missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo, and worked with the Allies and other partner countries in many other areas. |
