Background:

Greece considers the country's name represents a territorial claim over its northern province, also named Macedonia. Years of UN-mediated talks and pressure from the European Union achieved no progress. The dispute has been active ever since FYR Macedonia became an independent country.

Media sources reported in March 2016 on calls for resignation of the Greek migration minister Yannis Mouzalas after he mentioned neighbouring Macedonia by its name, in violation of the country's official position that the Balkan nation had usurped the name used by a region in northern Greece.

These calls were backed other members of the government, particularly those belonging to the nationalist ANEL party.
