This book provides an up-to-date analysis of some of the key issues facing the European Union on the (potentially rocky) road towards monetary union and enlargement. Many of the contributions to the volume were originally presented at an international conference, 'Economic integration in transition', held in Athens in August 1996 and organised by York University, Canada and the Athens University of Economics and Business, in cosponsorship with the Athenian Policy Forum. The aim of the conference was to evaluate the deepening and widening of the integration process both between the existing trading blocs such as NAFTA and the EU, and elsewhere. The present volume includes a selection of papers that focus on the European experience. After addressing general questions concerning the deepening and widening of European integration, the authors include theoretical and empirical analyses of the implementation of EMU and its feasibility. They also consider convergence and development within the EU, and the lessons to be learnt from the Nordic enlargement, as well as the experience of the Southern periphery.
