The European Central Bank warned bluntly on the 8 May 2008 that Greeceā€™s widening current account deficit may lead to a painful correction unless the government takes steps to strengthen competitiveness. Lucas Papademos, the ECB Vice-President, said the country needed to liberalise its labour and product markets, improve productivity and hold down wage increases over the medium term.
