Greece is threatening to block European Union enlargement if any Member State attempts to exclude a divided Cyprus from joining. Negotiations between Glafcos Clerides, Greek Cypriot leader, and Rauf Denktash, his Turkish Cypriot counterpart are continuing. Ten countries are due to join the EU at the end of 2002. The EU would prefer to admit a united Cyprus but failing that it has committed itself to admitting the Greek Cypriots first.
