Article reports that Greece’s socialist government was in turmoil on the 15 June 2011 amid speculation that George Papandreou, the prime minister, was planning to form a cross-party government to implement an unpopular new austerity package.

Later on the 15 June 2011 George Papandreou, Prime Minister, announced that he would form a new government and seek a vote of confidence later in the week, amid signs international lenders would release €12bn in aid the following week despite their failure to reach a new bail-out agreement.

Mr Papandreou had discussed forming a coalition between his PASOK parliamentary group and New Democracy, the main conservative opposition party, but no deal was reached, according to people with knowledge of the talks.

On the 17 June 2011 details of a cabinet reshuffle were announced.
