Following the election for the European Parliament presidency in January 2017, media sources reported on the end of the 'grand coalition' binding the S&D and the EPP.

Reports suggested the S&D aimed at closer cooperation with the groups to its left, in particular the Greens/EFA and the European Left. The exit of the former EP President Martin Schulz could reportedly help this strategy.
