Following the terrorist bombs in London on 7 July 2005, European governments are taking steps to tighten security.

At an Extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council in Brussels on 13 July 2005 the UK won support for EU-wide rules to store telecommunications and internet data, agreement on speeding measures to cut terrorist funding and to share intelligence
