Patricia Hewitt, the UK's Trade and Industry Secretary, is under pressure from trade unions to back down on Britain's "opt-out" clause within the European Union's Working Time Directive. Under the opt-out clause an individual employee may work more than an average of 48 hours a week at the request of employers, but only if the employee agrees.
