The UK government is to forge ahead of the rest of Europe in enforcing legislation requiring e-mails and web-site address data to be retained and available to the police and security forces. Changes to European data protection laws, agreed by the European Parliament in May 2002, will allow governments to require telecoms and internet companies to retain telephone and internet data for an uspecified period.
