The results of the farm-scale evaluations of three herbicide-tolerant GM crops in the United Kingdom - maize, beet and spring oilseed rape - were published on 16 October 2003, and show that growing GM crops was more harmful to wildlife and the environment than conventional farming. The findings have prompted calls for the Government to press for a European ban on the commercialisation of herbicide-resistant oilseed rape and sugar beet.
