France24 reported on the the 17 March 2014 that with one week to go before local elections that would decide who takes Paris’s top job, the main candidates had seized on the issue of high pollution to score political points off each other. The high pollution levels in Paris had seen the city offer in March 2014 free public transport and impose a partial driving ban in a bid to reduce the number of cars. The BBC reported that hundreds of police monitored traffic in Paris on the 17 March 2014 after high pollution levels prompted the French government to impose major restrictions. Only motorists with odd-numbered number plates were allowed to drive. |
