	Summary: The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration provides the first international and non-legally binding cooperative framework on migration. Its aim is to provide common understanding, shared responsibilities and unity of purpose regarding migration, making it work for all. Further information: This Declaration is the result of a comprehensive process of discussions and negotiations among all Member States of the United Nations that started with the New York Declaration in 2016, unanimously adopted at the UN General Assembly in 2016. It was eventually approved on 13 July 2018 by by 192 of the 193 members of the United Nations (UN). Around 30 countries eventually pulled out of the proposed Agreement, including the United States of America and a group of members of the European Union. The document was criticised by mostly right-wing politicians who say it would encourage immigration from certain regions of the world. Nonetheless, the Global Compact for Migration was signed by a great majority of UN members on 10 December 2018 in Marrakesh. The UN General Assembly formally endorsed the Global Compact on 19 December.
