Abstract:
This book has the overall aim to present an overview of potential economic consequences of trade and environment linkages in one place. To meet that goal several objectives have been set. First, to offer a prospective empirical examination of the potential environmental impact of agricultural trade liberalisation in the United States and globally. Second, to examine the potential impact of domestic (US) agri-environmental policies on trade. Third, to pay special attention to conceptual and policy issues on the relationship of agricultural trade to unintentional environmental by-products, transboundary concerns, and multilateral environmental agreements.

The work is organised in three parts comprising eight chapters in all. Following an introduction, chapter two addresses the conceptual and policy issues regarding the unintended environmental by-products provided by agriculture, and their linkages to agricultural trade, considering both the environmental amenities and disamenities. Chapter three explores empirically the effects of trade policy on the environment domestically, and chapter four makes a similar impact assessment globally. Chapter five deals with the effects of environmental policy on production and trade with emphasis on alternative agri-environmental policies designed to achieve set objectives. Chapter six follows this analysis with an in-depth look at agri-environmental pay programmes. Chapter seven addresses transboundary issues covered by multilateral environmental agreements and their linkages to international trade. The editor closes with some notes on the importance of eliminating global agricultural policy distortions.

The book will interest agricultural, development and environmental economists as well as policy researchers and policy makers engaged in environmental and economic assessment.
