Date: 06/06/1996 The new head of the European Parliament's information service Stig Berglind is making himself about as popular as a mousetrap in a male sauna. Parliament staff are so upset about Berglind's latest plans that they are thinking of adopting a UK-style policy of non-cooperation. Among the proposals which have aroused their ire is one to trim back the Parliament's Info-memo - a briefing paper designed to keep journalists informed of MEPs' activities - to just two pages. Impossible, say staff who have to cover 20 committees and put out notes not just daily but also on a weekly, and monthly basis. Berglind also wants the daily version translated into all working languages, an idea unlikely to get off the ground because the task would take two or three days and journalists might not be very thrilled to receive what is supposed to be a daily bulletin so late. Berglind has already upset the Info-memo staff by insisting that English must be put on an equal footing with French. Pas possible, they insist. |
