Date: 23/07/1998 In a development sure to cheer the hearts of dipsomaniacs everywhere, a recent report presented to the Parliament has once again concluded that wine is definitely good for your health. The study was presented to Parliament President José María Gil-Robles by Spanish wine lobby Fundacion Para la Investigacion del Vino - admittedly not the most unbiased of organisations on this particular subject. The report apparently found that wine can have a positive effect against such diverse illnesses as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. One of the main pieces of evidence cited for the document's findings was the so-called 'French Paradox': the fact that France has a lower per capita incidence of heart disease than other countries with similar dietary habits. This, say the researchers, is due to the fact that the French drink more wine than their continental neighbours. |
