Abstract:

Described previously by the same author as ‘a stone in Spain’s shoe’, Gibraltar remains an irritant in Anglo-Spanish relations. This work describes the attempts by Britain and Spain to resolve the dispute over Gibraltar since the 1984 agreement known as the Brussels Process.

The book covers Gibraltar’s historical attachment to Britain since 1704 and the influences that experience has brought to the negotiations. The determined stance of the Gibraltarians to maintain their close ties with Britain and their resolute opposition to any further Spanish involvement in their affairs is discussed in several chapters. Other chapters deal with issues such as decolonisation, Anglo-Spanish relations within the EU and NATO, and British strategic military considerations.

The work will interest scholars and students of British and Spanish politics.
