Speaking at special joint sitting of the German Parliament on 8 May 2005, marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, President Horst Köhler promised his country would not 'draw a line' under the 'moral ruin' of the Nazi period. Mr Köhler's speech followed weeks of public discussions, exhibitions and television documentaries on the war and its aftermath.

Chancellor Gerhard Schröder was due to participate in Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on 9 May 2005, the first time a German Chancellor has joined such events.
