It is likely that the European Union will reprimand Germany at the end of January 2002 over its budget deficit. The deficit could mean Germany will fall foul of the stability pact and this is causing concern in the United Kingdom where Tony Blair, UK Prime Minister, is anxious that any breach of the eurozone's fiscal rules could seriously undermine his strategy of gradually building up public support for the euro.
