Germany set to suffer record deficit

The German government will record its biggest post-war budget deficit ever in 2009 as the economic crisis sends tax revenues plummeting, Peer Steinbrück, Finance Minister, said on the 14 May 2009. Mr Steinbrück admitted the federal deficit would exceed €50bn in 2009 and rise to €90bn in 2010.

Plunging tax revenues would hit Germany hard. When Germans go to the polls in Septembern 2009, the figures will cast a shadow over Angela Merkel's - and other politicians' - plans to woo voters with pledged tax cuts.
