German left-wing parties - SPD, Greens and the Left Party - reached a coalition agreement on 19 November 2014 in the state of Thuringia which was set to allow the first far-left regional president since the fall of communism.

While Thuringia's Red-Red-Green coalition was meant to rule with a 50 percent majority, such agreement was seen as an opportunity to unlock possible agreements in other states and even in future general elections.
