Renate Künast, one of the two German Green co-leaders, has taken on the agriculture post with new responsibility for consumer protection. She replaces Karl-Heinz Funke, an old ally of Schröder's who quit on Tuesday. Schröder also confirmed Ulla Schmidt, a senior Social Democrat parliamentarian, to take on the health portfolio vacated by Green Andrea Fischer.
