Preview and reports of regional elections in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, 27 March 2011. The elections were seen as a referendum on Chancellor Angela Merkel's leadership. But her junior coalition partners, the Free Democrats (FDP), stood to lose the most. The party was at risk of stumbling below the 5% threshhold in both votes. Party head and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle's days of FDP leadership might be numbered. In the event Germany would have its first Green state premier after the Green Party triumphed in the elections in Baden-Württemberg. Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU suffered a resounding defeat in the state. |
