Euronews and the BBC reported that Russia was said to be concerned over unrest in Abkhazia where thousands of protesters had stormed the presidential palace on the 2 May 2014, forcing the president of the breakaway Georgian region to flee.

Many in Moscow-backed Abkhazia were said to be unhappy with the ailing economy and lack of reforms and accuse President Alexander Ankvab of cronyism and misrule.
