A cloud was cast over Traian Basescu’s victory in the Romanian presidential election, November / December 2009 when his rivals announced a legal challenge on the 8 December 2009 that could, in theory, force a re-run of the poll.

Mircea Geoana’s Social Democrats filed a complaint at the constitutional court amid claims that Sunday’s presidential contest was tainted by electoral fraud. The court said it would rule on the complaint by the end of the week but is considered highly unlikely to strike down the result.
