Gene-modified foods take root at centre of next trade dispute

A new confrontation between the US and EU over global trade rules is on the way only weeks after the failure of the World Trade Organisation talks in Seattle. Delegates from more than 130 countries arrived in Montreal on 24.1.00 for week-long talks aimed at concluding a 'biosafety protocol' to regulate trade in genetically modified organisms.
