Date: 12/02/04 EGYPT's Prime Minister Atef Obeid and his Jordanian, Lebanese and Syrian counterparts Faisal Al-Fayez, Rafik Hariri, and Mohammed Naji Otari, have agreed to start construction of the second phase of the Trans-Mashrak gas pipeline. This follows the Euro-Mediterranean meeting of energy ministers held in Rome last December. The first phase, completed last year, brought Egyptian gas to Aqaba, Jordan. The second phase provides for an extension to the Jordanian-Syrian border, with a branch leading to Lebanon. A further extension to Turkey and Greece is planned under the third phase. In a separate development, substantial progress has been achieved in supplying Egyptian gas to the Palestinian Territories and Israel. The European Commission has agreed to fund feasibility studies for the Nabucco project of a Turkey-Austria gas pipeline under the Trans-European-Energy-Networks Programme. Officials in the Commission's transport and energy directorate-general say that Jordan, Lebanon and Syria will soon be linked to the enlarged EU and the Balkans through the new pipelines. These are seen as strategically important due to diversification of gas supplies and access by the EU to the gas reserves of the Middle East and Caspian basin. |
