European Commissioners will not be silenced - and that's official.

A group of Eurosceptic British MPs has been trying to stop Commission officials speaking out in the midst of a rather crucial UK general election campaign.

More than 50 national parliamentarians have written to the BBC and ITV asking them not to allow such people air time during the elections for fear of influencing voters in favour of the European Union.

They maintain that speaking out, one way or the other, could breach the Commission's impartiality guidelines.

But the institution's resident myth-exploder in the UK, Geoff Martin, is unshaken. He says the request is “bizarre” and insists it is up to broadcasters to choose who they put on air without pressure from anyone.

His response also warns: “If Eurosceptics of any party attempt to use Europe as a political plaything, deploying myths, distortions and inaccuracies in their arguments, the Commission will respond vigorously with the facts. This remains the case.”
