The European Commission, the UN, the African Union (AU), and the G5 under the auspices of Nigerian President Mahamadou Issoufou co-chaired the International High Level Conference on the Sahel in Brussels on 23 February 2018.

The event focused on strengthening much-needed international support to Africa's Sahel countries in the areas of security and development, notably through the G5 Sahel Joint Force.

The conference mobilised political support for the Sahel region, €414 million to support the Joint security Force of the G5 Sahel whilst reinforcing the coordination of sustainable development efforts in the region.

In this commentary feature the author said that there was significant progress on funding and co-ordination, but problematic partnerships with local militias and abuses by security services still hampered prospects for the EU’s Sahel strategy.
