EurActiv reported in September 2016 on the European Commission's intention to see the proposal on a European Financial Transaction Tax being agreed upon by the end of the 2016. Negotiations had not had any significant advance since 2012, and in June 2016 finance ministers did not manage to go any further than postponing it yet again. In the context of a renewed interest in the concept of a multi-speed EU as part of the debate on the need for a EU relaunch in the spring of 2017, EurActiv suggested in March 2017 that the tortuous process of using the enhanced cooperation procedure by eleven EU Member States to adopt the proposal to adopt the Financial Transaction Tax was not a good omen. A ECOFIN report submitted to the European Council in June 2017 reiterated that further work at the Council and its preparatory bodies was still required, before a final agreement on the dossier can be reached. |
