Further information: At a meeting of the Bishop's conference in Paris on 9 April 2018 Macron spoke about a possible restoration of the link between Church and State. The link had been severed by the 1905 French law on the Separation of the Churches and the State that established state secularism in France. Secularism is a fundamental of French society, inscribed within the constitutional precepts of the Republic. The place of religion in the country is a sensitive issue with about half of the population being non-believers. Macron's intervention caused an uproar in the country. While leaders of the left are outraged by this measure that they feel goes against secularism, a key value of French society, right wing leaders are accusing Macron of pandering the conservative voters. Minister of the Interior Gerard Collomb who is in charge of the relations between Church and State explained that Macron wanted greater spiritual awareness and did not want to undermine the country's secular traditions. In his speech, Macron also encouraged religious leaders to voice their opinion when it comes to the country's upcoming bill on bioethics that would reconsider legalizing euthanasia and make single women and lesbian couples eligible for assisted reproduction.
