The French parliament approved the bill legalising gay marriage and adoption for same-sex couples in its final vote on the legislation on the 23 April 2013. The landmark reform had been the source of months of heated debate and demonstrations. French President François Hollande signed into law on the 18 May 2013 the controversial gay marriage bill, a day after the country's Constitutional Council threw out a legal challenge by the right-wing opposition. The move made France the ninth country in Europe and the 14th globally to legalise same-sex marriage. Subsequently, Far-right leader Marine Le Pen hailed the suicide of a far right activist opposed to gay marriage on the 21 May 2013 as an 'eminently political act'. Dominique Venner shot himself at Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral, filled with 1,500 visitors at the time. France's first gay marriage took place in the southern city of Montpellier on the 29 May 2013. In October 2013 France's highest court, the Constitutional Council, ruled that mayors cannot refuse to hold same-sex marriage ceremonies on the grounds that it conflicts with their beliefs. |
