French No vote ‘could force rate rise’

Report of the confirmation hearing in the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, European Parliament, 19 April 2005, at which the nomination of Lorenzo Bini Smaghi to the Executive Board of the European Central Bank was approved. During the hearing, Mr Bini Smaghi warned that a French rejection of the Constitutional Treaty for Europe could cause economic uncertainty and turbulence in the markets.
