Further information: On 20 March 2018 Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s president from 2007 to 2012, was taken into police custody in Nanterre, north-west Paris. He was questioned over allegations that he received millions of euros in illegal election campaign funding from the regime of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy repeatedly denied the allegations. On 21 March Sarkozy faced a second day of questioning and he was charged with corruption for accepting millions of euros from late Libyan dictator Gaddafi. Background information: Sarkozy has been under investigation since 2013 over claims that Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi's regime secretly gave him €50 million ($61.7 million) for the 2007 election campaign. The sum is more than double the legal campaign funding limit. On 20 March 2018 the former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was held in custody over irregularities in 2007 election campaign financing. |
